Big Island Youth Video Contest
BIG ISLAND YOUTH VIDEO CONTEST FAQ—FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is this contest? The Big Island Youth Video Contest is a program, going into its third year, which challenges residents of The Big Island to make short PSA (Public Service Announcement) type videos on the theme of “alternatives to drugs.” Who can enter the contest? Residents of The Big Island in two age categories, 11-16 and 17-22. Why was the program created? The program was created to allow young people to have a “voice” in a serious social problem—drug use—that affects them, and to challenge them to learn and apply important skills in video production in the making of these anti-drug videos. What kinds of videos are acceptable for entry? Participants need to produce a short video (1-5 minutes) on the theme of “alternatives to drugs.” Projects can be shot (originated) on any format—film, various video formats—but they need to be submitted in MiniDV. What content and approaches are acceptable? Participants are encouraged to let their creative juices flow in terms of approaches to the theme and challenge. All types or genres are acceptable from narrative, to documentary, to music video, comedy—drama, news reporting, musical, soap opera, etc. Nudity, offensive language, racial and/or ethnic stereotyping, and actual drug use are not acceptable. What are the timelines? Program announcements along with entry forms and rules and regulations sheets will be available in mid to late January of 2008. Entries must be submitted by April 11. Winners will be notified on May 7. What are the prizes? Each age category will have a Grand Prize, 2nd, and 3rd place winner. All entries will receive a prize of some sort. All entries will be screened at a screening and awards ceremony, which will be held in mid-May at the Big Island Film Festival at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott. Participants and their friends, family, and filmmaking colleagues will be invited to this gala event. Grand Prizewinners from each category will receive an offer of an all expense paid trip to Honolulu to visit and tour KHNL News 8 and other interesting and fun media companies and organizations in Honolulu. How will the award winning videos be identified? A “blue ribbon” jury of local film, business, and community leaders will select the winning projects. What criteria will the judges look for? Projects will be judged based on their originality, creativity, overall production quality, and effectiveness in communicating the anti-drug message. Who is supporting this contest?
